Christchurch or the Garden City is the largest of all the South Island cities with a population of around 330,000. Christchurch is the hub of the South Island. Located on the central east coast, Christchurch is the ideal base to explore the South Island. From here you can drive to Akaroa, Kaikoura, Hamner Springs and the West Coast, among many other hot spots, in the comfort and privacy of one of our new motor homes.
Akaroa has a unique place in New Zealand's history as the only French settlement in the country. Akaroa is 85 kilometres south east of Christchurch on the Banks Peninsula. The lovely bay side town has many streets with French names and is the oldest town in the Canterbury district. In the centre of the village is the wharf from which boat charters can take you to view the rare Hectors dolphins and picturesque features of Akaroa Harbour.
Situated midway between Christchurch and Picton, Kaikoura boasts stunning natural marine wonders and awe-inspiring alpine scenery. Kaikoura lies within the Southern Hemisphere Whale Sanctuary and is also home to the occasional Orca and the playful Dusky Dolphin. The east coast road is said to be one of the most spectacular in New Zealand.
Hanmer Springs is an alpine village set amongst a beautiful backdrop of valleys and mountains, situated 136km north of Christchurch. Hanmer is famous for its natural geothermal pools, which are there as a result of underground fault lines and fractures.
The West Coast must be seen to be truly believed. This region combines natural, awe-inspiring beauty and history integral to the development of NZ. |
